My Clothes Smell Damp: Expert Solutions to Rescue Them
There is nothing more frustrating than taking the laundry out of the washing machine expecting that fresh scent and finding a rancid "wet dog" or closed basement stench. As a washing machine technician and owner of LaColada in Ponferrada, I assure you that this is one of the top questions: "Why do my clothes smell damp if I just washed them?".
The good news is that your clothes are not cursed. The bad smell is caused by bacteria and fungi that have found a home in your fabrics. The bad news is that washing it again with more fabric softener not only doesn't fix it, but sometimes makes it worse. But don't worry, today we are going to see the definitive solution for clothes that smell damp, attacking the problem from the root.
Quick Diagnosis: Where is the problem?
Before throwing products around crazily, we need to know who the culprit is. Ask yourself these three questions:
- Do the clothes already come out smelling bad from the washing machine? Then the problem is your machine. It probably has mold on the rubber seal or in the filter. You need to read my guide on why the washing machine smells bad before continuing.
- Does it smell good coming out, but bad when drying? The problem is drying. You take too long to dry it or the environment is very humid.
- Does it smell bad when taking it out of the closet? You have moisture or mold in the drawers. Check our article on how to eliminate closet odors.
The "Rescue Protocol" with Vinegar and Baking Soda
If the clothes already smell bad, normal detergent won't kill those bacteria. You need something that changes the pH and disinfects. Forget bleach (which damages colors) and use these two magical ingredients that you surely have in the kitchen.
Method 1: Shock Wash (For resistant clothes)
- Put the affected clothes in the washing machine (don't overfill it).
- Add your usual detergent and, in the same compartment, half a cup of baking soda.
- In the fabric softener compartment, pour a cup of white cleaning vinegar (or apple cider vinegar if you don't have another).
- Run a long cycle at the highest temperature the clothes allow (ideally 60ºC for sheets and towels).
Vinegar kills bacteria and eliminates lime and old soap residues, while baking soda neutralizes acidic odors and boosts cleaning.
Method 2: Soaking (For very strong odors)
If the smell persists (typical in sports clothes or old towels), fill a basin with warm water, add a cup of vinegar, and leave the garment soaking for an hour before washing it normally. It works like a charm!
Prevention: How to avoid it happening again
Once the clothes are recovered, we don't want to go back to old ways. Follow these golden rules:
1. Quick and Total Drying
The damp smell appears when clothes take more than 24 hours to dry. If you live in a humid area or hang clothes indoors:
- Use a dehumidifier near the clothes rack.
- Separate the garments well, don't bunch them up.
- Take advantage of any ray of sunshine (the sun is the best UV disinfectant).
2. Don't abuse Fabric Softener
It seems contradictory, but fabric softener is "food" for fungi. It creates a waxy layer over fibers that traps moisture and bacteria. Try replacing it with vinegar in one out of every three washes.
3. Remove clothes IMMEDIATELY
Leaving wet clothes inside the closed drum after washing creates a spa for bacteria. If you forget the laundry inside for more than an hour, it is very likely to pick up a smell.
