About LaColada

Where exactly is Lacolada Self-Service Laundromat located?

You'll find us right in the heart of the Zona Alta (Upper Town) of Ponferrada, at Calle San Valerio, 19, 24400 Ponferrada, León. It's a very convenient location, near the Town Hall and points of interest like the Templar Castle and several pilgrim hostels (albergues).

What are LaColada's opening hours? Are you open on holidays?

We're here for you every day of the year! Our hours are from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM (22:00), non-stop. Yes, that includes Sundays and all public holidays. We never close, so you always have a solution for your laundry!

Do I need to book or make an appointment?

No, not at all! Ours is a completely self-service facility. You can come whenever suits you best within our wide opening hours (8:00 AM - 10:00 PM). There are usually machines available, but if you come during peak times, just a little patience might be needed!

Is there anyone there to help if I have questions?

Although it's self-service, you're not alone. We have clear instructions inside the laundromat and a support phone number (+34 650 09 82 13) available during opening hours to resolve any issues or answer questions you might have on the spot.

Is it a friendly and inclusive space?

Absolutely! At LaColada, we are proud to be a safe and friendly space for everyone, including the LGTBI+ community. We want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome.

What does it mean that you are an eco-friendly laundromat?

We care about the environment. We use energy-efficient machines, automatically dispense high-quality biodegradable products to avoid waste, and encourage washing full loads to optimize water and energy use. Taking care of your clothes and the planet is possible!

Is there free WiFi while I wait?

Of course! We know your time is valuable. We offer free WiFi connection for all our customers. So you can work, browse, or entertain yourself while your clothes wash and dry.

Is there parking nearby?

Yes, it's usually easy to find free parking on the streets near the laundromat. Being in the Zona Alta (Upper Town), there's often space available, especially during the week. There's also paid 'blue zone' parking on adjacent streets if you prefer.

How Our Self-Service Laundromat Works

How exactly does the self-service laundromat work?

Don't worry, it's very easy! Just choose a free-standing washing machine (12 kg and 16 kg available), insert your clothes and close the door tightly. Then select the program you want on the washing machine itself: 20 °C (low temperature), 30 °C (medium) or 40 °C (high). The machine only accepts €1 coins, but there is a change machine available for easy payment. Once the coin is inserted, the washing machine starts automatically and adds detergent, fabric softener and active oxygen. For drying, the process is just as simple: put the clothes in the dryer, select the time and pay directly with €1 coins.

Do I need to bring my own detergent or softener?

Not at all! That's one of the great advantages of LaColada. All our wash cycles automatically include professional detergent, fabric softener, and active oxygen for extra sanitization and impeccable results. You don't need to bring anything from home; it's all included in the price!

How long does a laundromat washing machine take?

Our washing machines are quite fast. Most wash programs last about 35 minutes. Only the special program for heavily soiled clothes in the 16kg washer takes a bit longer, around 40 minutes. Much faster than at home!

And how long does the dryer take to dry clothes?

The basic drying cycle is 15 minutes for €3. Our dryers are industrial and very powerful (18kg capacity). The total time will depend on the fabric type and the amount of clothing, but 15-30 minutes is usually enough for most loads. You can add more time if needed.

So, how long does it take in total to wash and dry at LaColada?

You can have your laundry completely clean and dry in less than 1 hour! Adding the approximate 35 minutes for washing and about 15-20 minutes for drying, it's a very quick and efficient process. Ideal if you're in a hurry or just want to make better use of your time.

Prices and Payment Methods

How much does it cost to wash clothes at LaColada?

We have very competitive prices: The 12kg washer (ideal for normal loads or a couple of single duvets) costs just €4. The large 16kg washer (perfect for double duvets, large blankets, etc.) costs €6. If you need the special program for heavily soiled clothes in the 16kg machine, it's €7. Remember, all products are included!

And how much does it cost to dry clothes?

The initial drying cycle costs €3 and gives you 15 minutes in our powerful 18kg dryers. If you need more time, you can easily add it at the machine. Each additional euro typically gives you about 7.5 extra minutes of drying time (extendable).

What payment methods do you accept? Can I pay by card?

Currently, our machines operate with cash payment. They only accept Euro coins. Don't worry if you only have bills; we have a change machine on-site to help you out! At the moment, we do not accept card payments.

Does the price include detergent, softener, and everything?

Exactly! The price you pay for the wash includes everything needed: high-efficiency detergent, pleasantly scented fabric softener, and active oxygen to sanitize your clothes thoroughly. There are no hidden costs, and you don't need to buy anything separately.

What to Wash (and What Not To)

Can I wash large duvets and blankets?

Absolutely! That's what our industrial 16kg washing machine is for. It's perfect for washing bulky items like double duvets (comforters), thick blankets, bedspreads, sofa covers... things that would hardly fit in a domestic washing machine.

Can rugs be washed in the self-service laundromat?

Generally, we do not recommend washing rugs in our machines. Rugs tend to become very heavy when wet, can shed fibers that clog filters, or have rubber backings that can get damaged. For rugs, it's best to consult specialized services or dry cleaners.

What about memory foam or latex pillows?

No, please do not wash memory foam or latex pillows in our machines. These materials can break apart or deform with the movement and water. Also, avoid washing leather items, fur, or fabrics with rigid plastic parts.

Can I wash a mattress protector/cover in the washing machine?

Yes, most mattress protectors (those made of fabric, quilted, or waterproof but breathable) can be washed perfectly in our machines, especially in the 16kg one if it's large. Just make sure the label allows machine washing and it doesn't have rigid or electrical components.

So, what kind of clothes can I wash?

Practically all your everyday clothes: t-shirts, pants, underwear, sheets, towels... And also larger items as mentioned: duvets/comforters (down or synthetic), blankets, washable curtains, fabric sofa covers, large stuffed animals, work clothes, uniforms, sportswear, etc. Always check the label first.

Can I put all my clothes together in the dryer?

It depends. Ideally, you should dry items made of similar fabrics that require the same temperature together. Check the labels. Don't overload the dryer so air can circulate well, allowing clothes to dry evenly and with fewer wrinkles. Delicate items might be better air-dried.

Hygiene, Safety, and Tips

I'm a bit concerned about hygiene, are self-service laundromats really hygienic?

We understand your concern. At LaColada, hygiene is a priority. We clean our machines and facilities regularly. Additionally, every wash includes active oxygen, a powerful sanitizing agent that helps eliminate bacteria and germs. The use of professional detergents and hot water cycles also contributes to a deep and safe clean.

Are there any risks to washing my clothes in a public laundromat?

The risks are minimal if you follow the instructions. Check your clothing labels, don't mix colors that bleed with whites, and don't wash prohibited items (like those mentioned before). Our machines are modern and safe. The biggest 'risk' is getting used to how easy and fast it is to get your laundry done!

Does washing at LaColada help sanitize clothes?

Yes, the process significantly contributes to sanitization. The combination of professional detergent, active oxygen (which has disinfectant properties), and water temperature (you can choose programs with hot water) helps eliminate a large portion of germs and bacteria.

Is washing at 30 degrees considered cold water?

Yes, commonly, washing at 30°C is considered a cold or cool wash. It's an effective temperature for most everyday clothes, safe for many fabrics, and more energy-efficient than washing at higher temperatures.

Does washing at 30 degrees shrink clothes?

Generally, washing at 30°C is quite safe and usually doesn't shrink most garments. Shrinkage typically occurs at higher temperatures (40°C, 60°C or more), especially with natural fabrics like cotton or wool. It's always good to check the garment's label just in case.

At what temperature should I wash white clothes to get them really clean?

For white cotton or durable fabrics that are quite dirty, you can use programs at 40°C or even 60°C for deep cleaning and enhanced whiteness. However, if they are not very dirty or are more delicate, 30°C or 40°C may be sufficient and helps preserve the fabrics better.

And colored clothes, what temperature should they be washed at?

For colored clothes, it's ideal to use cold or cool temperatures, like 30°C or a maximum of 40°C. This helps prevent colors from fading or bleeding onto other garments. Always separate intense colors from light ones for the first few washes.

I hate ironing! Any tricks to remove wrinkles from clothes without an iron when using the dryer?

We get it! A good trick is not to overload the dryer. Remove the clothes as soon as the cycle finishes, while they're still warm, shake them out well, and fold or hang them immediately. The residual heat will help relax the wrinkles. Some people toss in a damp cloth or a couple of ice cubes during the last few minutes of drying (carefully!).

My clothes sometimes feel stiff after washing, how can I soften them?

This can happen due to excess detergent or very hard water. At LaColada, we use the right amount of product. If you notice your clothes are stiff, make sure not to overload the washer. Using fabric softener (which we include) helps a lot. When drying, avoid over-drying, as that can also stiffen fibers.

Help, my clothes aren't coming out dry from the dryer!

If you notice the dryer isn't drying well, check a couple of things: Was the dryer too full? It needs space for hot air to circulate. Were the items very thick or water-absorbent (like towels)? They might need a longer cycle. Make sure you selected enough drying time. If you suspect a problem with the machine, please call us.

For Pilgrims and Travelers

Is LaColada a good option for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago?

We are an ideal stop for pilgrims! We are very close to several hostels (albergues) in the Zona Alta (like San Nicolás de Flue, Alea, Guiana) and our service is fast (clean and dry clothes in under 1 hour). Perfect to rest, wash your clothes, and continue your journey refreshed.

Can I wash my sleeping bag and technical hiking clothes?

Yes, most sleeping bags (check the label) and technical clothing can be washed in our machines. Use a delicate cycle if necessary and the 16kg washer for the sleeping bag. For drying, use a low or medium temperature to avoid damaging the technical fibers or the sleeping bag's filling.

I'm traveling in a motorhome/RV, is LaColada accessible? Is there parking?

Yes! Our location in the Zona Alta allows for relatively easy access, and as mentioned, there's usually free street parking nearby where a motorhome might fit (depending on size and availability). Our large-capacity machines are ideal for washing several days' worth of travel laundry.
